One rather memorable one featured Thiem stumbling onto his backside before popping up and keeping the ball in play until Nadal made a mistake.

Coco Gauff has been in the middle of another electric ride, this time at the Australian Open. Given how poised she is and the maturity of her game, it's easy to overlook the fact that she's still just 15, came into this match off matches against three tough opponents -- including Venus Williams and defending champion Naomi Osaka -- and did her best to handle all the hype surrounding her remarkable progress.

• Both of these young women have versatile games, but where Gauff can back up her skills with explosive athleticism, Kenin must live by her wits. Kenin showed in this match how fluent she is with the entire tennis hymnal. In addition to 21 forehand unforced errors, Gauff also misfired with the backhand 17 times. By contrast, Kenin made just 12 unforced forehand errors and miscued on the backhand side a paltry five times. 
• ESPN analyst Patrick McEnroe put it best late in the first set of the round of 16 match between 15-year-old Coco Gauff and Australian Open No. 14 seed Sofia Kenin. After a compelling rally filled with crisp shot selection by both players, he observed: "Both of these women have high tennis skills and high tennis IQs."
• Forget those seven Gauff double faults that seemed to jump out of the television screen. She likes to go big on both serves, and the damage she did with powerful second serves more than compensated for the errors. The bigger service problem for Gauff was a so-so first serve conversion percentage against a player who's highly capable of exploiting second serves. Gauff put just 56% of her first serves into play yet won just 44% of her second-serve points. Kenin converted an outstanding 73% of her first-serve chances, which helped keep Gauff at bay. That ensured Gauff was able to convert just one of her break points, while Kenin made good on 5 of 12. Gauff's serve was more dangerous, but Kenin's was effective.

• Osaka made 30 unforced errors, Gauff merely 17. This was a rematch from the third round at the US Open last September; Osaka won that one in straight sets, then consoled a crying Gauff afterward and encouraged her to speak to the fans.

Coco Gauff is only 15, still growing in every way, and still fresh to the world of professional tennis, but she can win this Australian Open. The match was held in Margaret Court Arena, one of three stadiums with a retractable roof, and that was a good thing. For all of the concern among some players entering the tournament about air quality because of wildfires burning in parts of the country, the big issue Monday was a heavy storm that arrived in the afternoon and suspended play on outside courts for hours.

• Neither player displayed her absolute best abilities for stretches: They combined for far more unforced errors, 71, than winners, 42. One key was that Williams ended up with 41 of those miscues, 11 more than Gauff.

I’m a professional tennis player on the ATP Tour.

John Isner is the world’s 14th-ranked men’s singles player and the top-ranked American man. He opens play at the U.S. Open on Tuesday.

Unlike athletes in a league like the NFL or the NBA, who can rely on their teams to cover most of their playing-related expenses, I’m a one-man company. The members of my support team—coaches, trainers, agents and more—are paid their salaries and fees directly out of my pocket, and I cover their flights, meals and accommodations for tournaments, not to mention my own travel expenses.

The Open’s Escalating Prize Money

This year, the men’s and women’s singles champions will make $3.85 million. The 2007 Open purse was $19.6 million, and that was after the largest single-year increase in the tournament’s history; this year, the total player compensation will be $57.2 million. And players will be guaranteed $58,000 just for stepping on the court, up from the $17,500 Jarkko Nieminen received when I beat him in the first round in 2007.

In danger of losing money for competing

The expenses can really add up, particularly at tournaments like Wimbledon and the French Open. In those cases, if I don’t win a match, I’m actually in danger of losing money for competing.

You do well as a pro tennis player when you’re ranked in the top 20

Don’t get me wrong, you do well as a pro tennis player when you’re ranked in the top 20. But that can be short-lived. Brands are paying you to get their logos on televised show courts, so if your matches aren’t being featured on broadcasts because your play has fallen off—or because the ATP Tour or a Grand Slam event has struck a broadcast agreement that diminishes visibility, or because you’re injured and not playing at all—they’re going to stop calling.

Prince supplies my rackets in exchange for the exposure of being connected to one of the biggest servers in the game; when I line up along the baseline, the “P” stencil on my strings is clearly visible. 

Players might also make more or less than their competitors depending on where they’re from and how many big potential sponsors they have back home. But even in the U.S., which loves its sports and its stars, we have our challenges.

Tennis’ Off-The-Court Juggernauts

Because of their success on the court and the places they call home, tennis’ five highest earners make considerably more in endorsement income than their competitors. Most players in the next tier, which includes John Isner, can hope to make $3 million or $4 million in a good year.

I just want players to be able to make a fair living

I certainly don’t want to turn tennis players into walking billboards, but I also want to make it easier to make a living in a sport where no real part of my income is fixed. Remember, too, that even the “old-timers” of tennis are retiring before 40. (Right, Roger? Serena?) You’d better hope you made enough money and managed it well enough that you can support your family for the next 50 years of your life. Tournaments and tours could make some small changes to let us sell the small amount of space we have to work with on our hats and our sleeves to give my colleagues and future players a better chance of finding sustainable financial success. It just doesn’t seem fair for players to be restricted in how they earn money by the same groups that profit off the product we deliver on and off the court.

Forbes has tracked the leading earners in sports for three decades, and only seven athletes have landed in the top spot since 1990 (Tiger Woods holds the record with 12 times at No. 1). Global soccer icon Lionel Messi adds an eighth name to the roll call this year and, after longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo, is only the second soccer player to rank first.

The top 100 spans 10 sports and includes athletes from 25 countries. Their $4 billion in combined earnings from prize money, salaries and endorsements between June 2018 and June 2019 is up 5% from last year, when Floyd Mayweather was first with $285 million.

NFL contracts for elite stars carry huge upfront signing bonuses, pushing this quartet of gridiron greats to career-high paydays and their first appearances on the top 100. They are joined by Philadelphia’s new $330 million slugger.

Basketball Rules

Thirty-five NBAers made the cut, with cumulative earnings of $1.3 billion. Credit basketball’s skyrocketing player salaries driven by a near doubling of the salary cap over the past five years. Tennis players make four times as much from endorsements and appearance fees as from prize money.

USA vs The World

More than half of the top 100 earners play in the NFL or the NBA, giving Americans the advantage on total earnings, but the rich endorsement portfolios of international tennis and soccer stars mean higher average earnings for those outside the U.S.

Rising Tides

The top earner in sports has regularly banked more than $100 million annually since Tiger Woods rose to prominence in the 2000s, but the major shift is the rise of the next class of paychecks. The earnings for the tenth-highest-paid player is up 150% in 15 years.

Elite athletes are earning more than ever thanks to soaring salaries driven by ever-richer TV contracts. The cutoff to crack the world’s 100 highest-paid athletes is $25 million this year, compared with $17.3 million five years ago.

Here is a breakdown of the sports, nationalities, sponsors and more for the world’s 100 highest-paid athletes.

Sport

Athletes from 10 sports made the top 100. NBA stars led the way with 35 players (down from 40 last year), headed by LeBron James at $89 million.

The NFL was the next-best-represented sport with 19 athletes. Russell Wilson ($89.5 million) and Aaron Rodgers ($89.3 million) are well ahead of their peers after signing new deals with signing bonuses worth a combined $115 million.

Baseball (15 athletes); soccer (12); golf, boxing and tennis (5 each); and racing (2) also landed multiple stars in the top 100. For the fourth straight year, Virat Kohli ($25 million) and McGregor were the lone representatives from cricket and mixed martial arts. No NHL player or Nascar driver earned $20 million during the past year.

Nationality

There are 25 countries represented in the top 100. The United States had 62 athletes make the cut, thanks to the sky-high salaries in the major U.S. sports leagues, although the tally was down from 65 in 2018. Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton and boxer Anthony Joshua (both at $55 million) led the U.K contingent of five athletes. France and Spain each had three athletes while Brazil, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Serbia and Venezuela all had two.

The top 100 earned $986 million from endorsements, memorabilia and appearance fees, up 12% from last year, as companies focused their marketing budgets on elite talent. Nike has the most athletes under contract, with 51 of the top 100.

Nike’s chief rival, Adidas, endorses 17 athletes in the top 100, including those under its Reebok brand. PepsiCo, along with its Gatorade and Mountain Dew brands, is affiliated with 13 athletes by Forbes’ count.

Surprise

The biggest surprise is that not a single Chinese superstar is found in The World's Highest-Paid Athletes. China is a global powerhouse in multiple areas (e.g., business, science, and technology). From now on I anticipate that we have to count on China on the next list.

Inolvidable 6/6/2019: La prodigio americana Amanda Anisimova vence a la número 1 y pasa a la semifinal de Roland Garros

Con tan sólo 17 años, la prodigio estadounidense Amanda Anisimova, en total control frente a Simona Halep, la campeona vigente de Roland Garros, ha ganado en dos sets, 6-2, 6-4, y se clasifica a la semifinal del torneo. 

Una estrella ha nacido.

Inolvidable partido.

La jovencita Anisimova ha sido la que ha impuesto las condiciones como si fuese ella la veterana.

Con sus 1.80 de estatura, Amanda se desplaza velozmente, su juego es agresivo, y logra muchos winners. Es derecha y su revés es a dos manos.

Tiene una elegancia enorme en su juego.

Tiene ángel.

Lo tiene todo.

Fue una verdadera exhibición su partido con Simona Halep.

Opinión: ¿Puede Roger Federer ganar el Roland-Garros 2019?

Voy a responder a la pregunta primero con mi corazón. Roger Federer es un prodigioso tenista. Su contribución a la leyenda del tenis es maravillosa. Es tal su talento que hace ver el tenis muy fácil. Sus golpes son casi arte. Es tal mi admiración por él que de corazón mi respuesta es que es aún posible.

Pero cuando analizo cerebralmente la pregunta, cuando pienso en sus rivales que son también leyendas vivientes del tenis. Cuando lo comparo con Rafael Nadal, con el rey de las superficies de arcilla, y rey del abierto francés, entonces claramente veo a Rafa superior. Y más con la exhibición que viene de dar ganando en Roma a Djokovic. 

Y precisamente Novak Djokovic lógicamente me parece superior a Federer claramente en este momento. Luego ya lo ubico en tercer lugar de favoritismo. 

Yo espero que Roger llegue a las semifinales y allí todo es posible porque es un genio del tenis. Porque a pesar de su edad aún juega fabulosamente bien. Y si sus rivales bajan tan sólo un poco su nivel Federer puede vencerlos. 

Mi mayor duda en estos momentos es su condición física. Ojalá le aguante para el bien del tenis y de todos. 

En entrevista para L'Equipe Federer acaba de confirmar que ahora ya está enamorado de París y de su Roland-Garros. 

Antes su gran amor era Wimbledon. Porque ese torneo es maravilloso y porque era el torneo que ganaron sus ídolos Edberg, Becker y Sampras. Y precisamente sus ídolos nunca ganaron el abierto francés. 

En 2009 finalmente ganó su único Roland-Garros.

En 2018 ganó su último Grand Slam, el abierto de Australia. En superficie dura. 

Evidentemente la arcilla no es la superficie que mejor le conviene. Roger necesita gastar lo menos posible en cada partido. Y en arcilla los puntos son mucho más largos en general. El servicio no tiene el mismo impacto. Por ello sus ídolos nunca ganaron el French Open. 

En conclusión de corazón creo que es aún posible que Roger Feder pueda ganar el Rolando Garros. Lógicamente le veo una mínima oportunidad.

Roland Garros, el abierto de Francia, comienza el 26 de mayo y hay dos extraordinarios eventos enfrentados que sólo uno de los dos podría darse:

1. El rey de la arcilla Rafael Nadal repita su triunfo del Master de Roma y gane una final contra Novak Djokovik o contra quien sea, conquistando su 12º título de Grand Slam de arcilla. 
2. El actual número 1 del mundo, Novak Djokovic, que ha ganado los últimos tres títulos de Grand Slam, gane el abierto francés y logre por segunda vez en su maravillosa carrera ganar consecutivamente cuatro Grand Slam.

Nadal ha ciertamente ganado en Roma a Djokovik de una forma magistral. Por primera vez le ha ganado un set 6 - 0. Casi de no creerlo. Y el set final se lo ganó 6 - 1. 

Djokovik tiene de qué preocuparse. Nadal ha vuelto alcanzando un pico de forma excepcional. Y el Abierto francés es para ya. Y el último ganador del Roland Garros fue el rey de la arcilla Rafa Nadal venciendo con enorme autoridad al talentoso Dominic Thiem, 6–4, 6–3, 6–2.

La temporada 2018 fue inolvidable para Novak. Y lo que llevamos de temporada en 2019 también. 

A la espera de ganar su cuarto Grand Slam consecutivo, Djokovik ha vencido en los tres previos así:

1. Wimbledon Championships, Abierto inglés 2018. Djokovik venció en la final a Kevin Anderson, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(7-3).
2. US Open, Abierto de los Estados Unidos 2018. Novak venció en la final a Juan Martín del Potro, 6–3, 7–6(7–4), 6–3. 
3. Australia Open, Abierto de Australia 2019. Djokovik ganó la final a Nadal con autoridad, 6–3, 6–2, 6–3.

En Wimbledon 2018 Djokovik ganó a Nadal en semifinales en un clásico del tenis inolvidable, 6–4, 3–6, 7–6(11–9), 3–6, 10–8.

Dos leyendas, Rafael Nadal y Novak Djokovic, acaban de jugar la final del Master de Roma.

El rey de la arcilla, el prodigio español, Rafael Nadal, derrotó al número 1 del mundo actual, al prodigio serbio, Novak Djokovic, en tres sets, 6 - 0, 4 - 6 y 6 - 1.

Justo a tiempo, como lo dice CNN, ganando su noveno título romano como lo describe ESPN, Nadal ha vuelto para ratificarse como un gran favorito del prestigioso Roland Garros, el "Grand Slam" en arcilla, su territorio, o mejor su reinado. Rafa ha ganado 11 veces el abierto francés. 

En esta temporada Nadal había perdido 3 semifinales en arcilla. Este es su primer triunfo en su superficie preferida.

Un triunfo con un sello único. Por primera vez en 142 sets en los que se han enfrentado, Nadal ganó un set 6 - 0, sin conceder ni un punto a su adversario legendario. El sello único se denomina "UN BAGEL".

Big Picture: El Big Picture de los deportes de Wikipedia

Cuando visitamos la entrada “Sport” (Deporte) en Wikipedia en inglés (porque es más completa que en español, y probablemente que en cualquier idioma) nos estamos situando en la raíz del Big Picture de los deportes que Wikipedia ha construido sin decirlo explícitamente. Al navegar por los diferentes enlaces se va navegando en una red, una especie de sistema nervioso interminable de los deportes.

La entrada "Sport" en Wikipedia tiene una tabla de contenido que sería la descripción de los ítems que conforman la base de su Big Picture de los Deportes.

De la tabla de contenido de Wikipedia, observamos que su punto de partida es “Meaning and usage”, el significado y uso de la palabra “Sport” (Deporte).

El segundo numeral en la tabla es “History” (Historia), que habilita la exploración de la historia de los deportes. Las industrias deportivas involucran soluciones globales al manejo de negocios que en algunos casos cubren una base de miles de millones de clientes.  Se manejan como negocios modernos con ciencia y tecnología de punta.

El tercer numeral, “Fair play” (Juego limpio), es un tema crucialmente importante, determinante de la credibilidad de los deportes. Estamos en la raíz de los deportes, en los principios clave del deporte que establece que

“El resultado no puede ser predeterminado, y todos deben tener la misma oportunidad de ganar”.

“Las reglas están en su lugar para asegurar el juego limpio”.

Ese juego limpio hace el deporte sano.

El problema es la trampa que claramente la realizan los participantes que rompen las reglas con el fin de obtener ventaja.  Y cada participante que hace trampa atenta dramáticamente contra todo el Big Picture del deporte.

Como precisa Wikipedia los participantes pueden engañar con el fin de aumentar injustamente sus posibilidades de ganar, o con el fin de lograr otras ventajas tales como ganancias financieras. 

En este numeral Wikipedia incluye lo que es un cáncer para el deporte: el dopaje y las drogas. Se precisa que todos los deportes reconocidos por el Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) o por SportAccord están obligados a implementar un programa de control para asegurar el juego limpio. Y deben haber sanciones para los que no respeten las reglas.

El cuarto numeral de la tabla de contenido describe la participación por género. Es muy importante remarcar que la participación de la mujer en los deportes sigue creciendo junto a la oportunidad de involucrar el valor de los deportes en el desarrollo infantil y la aptitud física. A pesar de las ganancias durante las últimas tres décadas, una brecha persiste en las cifras de inscripción entre los jugadores masculinos y femeninos.

Uno de los ítems de este numeral describe al espectador de los deportes y los medios que se utilizan para que disfruten de los deportes. Tanto el deporte professional como el aficionado, atraen a los espectadores tanto en persona en el lugar donde se desarrolla el evento deportivo como a través de los diferentes medios de difusión, incluyendo la radio, la televisión e internet. La asistencia en persona o remota puede incurrir en costos, como un ticket de entrada o la televisión bajo la opción pay-per-view o pague por ver.  

El numeral 9 de la tabla de contenido trata el crucial tema de la popularidad de los deportes. La tabla que nos presenta Wikipedia muestra los 10 deportes con mayor número de fans y el ámbito que alcanza su difusión.
